Habits to Harness

Touching the Line

The Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher, Marcus Aurelius, says: “Never act without purpose and resolve, or without the means to finish the job.” This is the essence of Touching the Line, the act of reaching the end every-single-time. A habit that is easier said than done, but is worthy of building your mindset upon. Perhaps you are the type of person to usually meet deadlines, but occasionally come up short or give yourself a free pass. There is a major difference between the person who occasionally lapses and the person committed to Touching the Line. The defining factor is the sense of self one holds, because the person who lives by this habit holds themselves to a higher standard.

The course of life is shaped by the standards we uphold, the internal framework we abide by—our integrity. Aurelius is perhaps one of the greatest models of integrity, as a man who had the ability to live life however he desired, but instead chose a life virtue. He recognized our inherent purpose on earth to be naturally achieving one’s greatest potential. If your aspiration is to find your greatest potential, then true merit lies in the ability to finish every-single-time. Deliver on your promises, hit your deadlines, and apply your best effort in the process. Forge a legacy you can look back on with pride.

The Hard-Right

Navigating through life’s dimensions—forward and backward, left and right, up and down—can be challenging when deciding which direction to take. However, establishing a set of ethical principles, then forming habits based on them, provides a clear guide. The Hard-Right involves solving problems and handling situations in the correct way, even when it presents greater difficulty. The easier path often appears less challenging because it may not require considering all aspects, such as people’s responses or potential sacrifices. While shortcuts may exist, the benefit arises from taking the road less-traveled. Progressing from a-b-c-d instead of a-d offers the advantage of experience and a sound moral compass. This habit manifests in various forms—studying, exercising, working—but the core idea is that avoiding shortcuts consistently provides long-term advantages.

If you want to be a valuable asset, no matter the industry, you must have the self-control to always respond justly. To make this more actionable, imagine yourself as an entrepreneur discovering an extra zero in an angel investor’s check for one of your projects. You face two choices: accept the amount and your ability to expand manifolds, or return the funds, letting the investor know of their mistake. If you choose wisely, then success or failure, you will have established a business partner who’s trust you’ve now gained. In the grand scheme, relationships are far more valuable than mere monetary gains. Practicing The Hard-Right instills these principles, and is crucial to fulfillment in life.

Showing Up

When you commit, stay true to your commitment and never lose sight of your goal. Many might say Showing Up is simply the first step, then all the hard stuff comes after that. To be contrarian to this insight, I believe this habit proves the most vital when building a robust mindset. Lost days hurt more than successful days help. In other words, don’t let setbacks eat into the compounding of your efforts. A previous blog included the habit of Never Miss Twice, showing the power of momentum and importance of not breaking the chain. However, what must come before that is the ability to see why your endeavors matter—Showing Up even when you feel weak and tired.

James Clear, the author of Atomic Habits and an expert in habit formation, wisely advises, “When determining the size or complexity of a new habit, ask yourself, ‘What can I stick to—even on my worst day?’ Start there. Master the art of showing up. Then advance.” The art of Showing Up is not just important but mandatory in all ventures. James Clear imparts this knowledge because he recognizes it as a hurdle everyone must overcome before reaching the next level. Therefore, consistently show up to work, attend all your classes, and only then can you achieve progress. The key is understanding why you’re where you are or why you’re not where you want to be.
